Surgical: Executive Committee Member

Hi everyone,

I am Sayanen and I am running for Executive Committee of Surgical Society. As a current subcommittee member, I have attended and helped to organise SurgSoc’s biggest events such as the Trauma Conference, the VRiMS Conference, Specialties Spotlight, FSS and the Ortho Conference. I am also the year 1 JAS Lead. From these experiences I have learnt:

  1. How to contact speakers for events, having successfully contacted speakers for Specialties Spotlight.
  2. How to lead events, having greeted and presented the speakers at Specialties Spotlight.
  3. How conferences are planned, set up and packed up, including handling of equipment (such as blading scalpels), ordering medical meat, setting up technology, organising food and structuring the day so that the delegates can experience all of the opportunities.
  4. How to collaborate with peers to organise teaching.

My experience privately tutoring, being academic rep and being Head Boy of my school have helped me develop my leadership skills, ability to delegate and communicate well with my peers to ensure tasks are carried out efficiently.

In my role as Executive Committee Member, I hope to take lead of FSS and Specialties Spotlight, having been heavily involved in them this year and I aim to continue to improve the events by collaborating with other societies and medical schools. I also hope to introduce a suturing focussed series as I have found delegates particularly enjoy suturing at conferences.

I aim to contribute greatly to Surgical Society and work with the team to revolutionise student experience of med school.
