Saran Gill

Surgical: Executive Committee Member

Hello, my name is Saran Gill and I’d like to apply for the position of General Executive. Surgical Society has been paramount in identifying and cultivating my love of surgery. If elected, I’d be able to deliver events that would facilitate this idea for others and would focus on engagement with those in their early years.

Having frequent in-person events would allow the younger students to interact with, and learn from, peers that share similar interests. I’d aim to tailor events to focus on how students can prepare themselves for surgical careers while at medical school: from surgery specific research and portfolio advice to insights into the day-to-day life of a surgeon at all levels.

Through attending various SurgSoc and external events, and my role in PSD 2021, I’ve gained valuable insight into the methods and practicalities of running large scale events. I’ve since organised my own events and series, notably the BRS Crashcourse and a CPD awarded Basic Surgical Skills series. These endeavours taught me about the problem-solving element of event planning, such as dealing with setbacks, and technological failures. Through my involvement with the WHO, in which I have been writing a report along with a team of experts, I have learnt to balance different aspects of life – an important attribute in a role within SurSoc.

Overall, effective leadership, teamwork and delegation is pivotal to the success of all events - Traits that I’d aim to demonstrate as a General Executive. Thank you for reading my manifesto.
