Hey everyone, I’m Basit, a MechEng student and your current Student Trustee.
This past year, I’ve very vocally represented you at the highest level of Union governance - scrutinising budgets, challenging policy, and making sure student priorities are not sidelined.
My governance experience, assessment reform work with senior staff, and years of student representation mean I can strategically influence decisions and deliver the student voice with impact.
What I’ve Achieved:
- Financial Oversight & Transparency - Reviewed Union budgets and long-term plans to ensure funding prioritises welfare, CSP support, and cost-of-living relief.
- Cost of Living Advocacy – Kept affordability central in Trustee discussions, challenging rising pressures on housing, campus services, and student expenses.
- Welfare & EDI Accountability – Pushed for stronger tracking of mental health funding, widening participation efforts, and inclusive student spaces - turning strategy into measurable action.
- Supporting Societies & Student Leaders - Advocated for reducing bureaucracy, improving financial clarity, and ensuring sustainable funding so CSPs can thrive.
- Sustainable & Responsible Growth - Questioned investment and expansion decisions to ensure they reflect student values and long-term responsibility.
What’s Next:
- Improving union digitisation strategy to improve efficiency of union processes
- Ensuring Imperial’s expansion plan delivers study spaces, community areas, and proper support across all campuses.
- Increasing student consultation in major investment and policy decisions.
- Pushing for better hardship and disability support, fairer rents, and expanded employment and scholarship opportunities.
- Creating better alumni support networks to benefit students and graduates in career development.
