Hello! I’m Millad, a second-year Chemist, and I am running for Working Class Network Member!
93% of UK students are state-schooled. 65% of Imperial students come from state schools, of which 25% come from socioeconomically disadvantaged state schools. Therefore, it is pivotal that our community of working-class, low-income and first-generation students have the opportunities to build professional networks and the appropriate channels to voice our needs and concerns.
What makes me a credible candidate?
My parents left Afghanistan without qualifications, family and connections. I grew up in a low-income household with working-class parents and attended socioeconomically disadvantaged state schools all my life, so I am proud to say that I am the first generation in my family to have completed secondary education and go to university.
What have I done so far?
- I have volunteered at open, taster and offer holder days for the Chemistry department, sharing my experience with state-schoolers and advising them on how to navigate university finances
- I am a mentor on Zero Gravity, a platform where I help students from low-opportunity backgrounds with achieving their university offers
What will I do if elected?
- Promote social mobility initiatives including mentoring and skills workshops
- Campaign for lower food costs on campus
- Work with the ICU Advice Service to access hardship support
- Delegate actions at network meetings to shape priorities at Imperial with us in mind
