Aiko Goff
Chemical Engineering (UG): Year One Academic Representative
Hi everyone! I’m Aiko, and I’m running to be your Academic Rep. We’ve all experienced the same challenge over the past few weeks; adapting to lectures, problem sheets and general uni life - all while navigating a new city, cooking for ourselves, and making friends. As your representative, I want to bridge the student-faculty gap to make academic life as smooth as possible for everyone. Having previously served as House Captain and School Ambassador, I am experienced in working with leadership to drive meaningful change.
My priorities:
- Connecting our cohort: Create module-specific subgroups in our Y1 group chat and introduce monthly WhatsApp ‘updates’ so you always know what’s being discussed during department meetings.
- Accessible resources: Organize a shared student repository for past papers, compile a central calendar for displaying the office hours of all lecturers, and advocate for earlier releases of assignments.
- Mid-module check-ins: Introduce regular, informal and anonymous mid-module ‘check-in’ surveys to be filled in by the cohort, which will be used to address academic concerns. If you are finding lectures too fast paced, I’m sure that other students will be feeling the same!
- Fairer deadlines: Ensure that assignment submissions are spaced out, eliminating the stress of deadlines falling on the same week, and that students have a clear timeline of when feedback will be issued.
I am motivated, organized and dedicated to supporting our cohort. As a Year Rep, I will give 100% to make academic life more manageable and ensure that no student feels isolated during this transition!
