Matylda Karolewska
Physics (UG): Year One Academic Representative
My Vision
1. Stronger student voice: Make student feedback an integral part of how the Physics course is run, not just collected and forgotten
2. Lines of communication: Set up a reliable link between students, the academic representative and the HoD so concerns reach the right people and are acted upon
3. Freedom of speech, academically and otherwise: Commend creativity, controversial thinking, and nonconformity. Endorse freedom of expression, seeing debate and dissent as a condition of a community that will excel.
4. A course that works for us: Push for a department that listens, adapts, and aims to better the Y1 experience
What I want
- Community: Organise optional weekly sessions to work through problem sheets, catch up notes, learn from others in a more relaxed environment.
- Make resources accessible: Set up a textbook exchange
- Support structures: develop a supportive cohort where students feel comfortable asking for help and collaboratings, setting up the group chats to be used in a more practical way
What i’ll do
- A better feedback system: Collect student suggestions regularly, raise key issues with the department and advocate for action
- Social(-ish) sessions: Arrange optional sessions where students can collaborate and discuss Physics questions
- Mitigating circumstances: Support and signposting to the right support services so all instances of extenuating circumstances are taken into account
- A student-led exchange: Create a system for donating, borrowing or passing on textbooks and materials
