Physics (UG): Year One Academic Representative

I’m Aleena and having lived in Yorkshire my entire life, I’ve found moving to London a huge change. I'm running as Academic Representative because I'm inspired by everyone's varying backgrounds, that we’ve been brought together from all over the world to study something as fascinating as Physics. I want our university and transition experience to be optimal and to make learning easier for everyone.

Through collaboration with staff, I aim to:

  1. Make Python/computing labs easier to understand initially, with more intermediate steps in the worksheets and additional exercises building on foundational rather than new skills, especially for those who have never coded before.
  2. Following the lab tutorial videos’ success, provide video walk-throughs of difficult "end-of-test" questions on problem sheets that everyone can access, even if they can’t make it to office hours.
  3. Be someone who will amplify your voice. Since it's early in the year, it's difficult to gauge what we need but feedback throughout the year can help me channel your ideas to the right places.

In Sixth Form, I was language leader and head student, responsible for organising school events, interviewing new student union members, making changes within school and attending governor meetings. I advocated for students to be able to take GCSE astronomy as private candidates, subsequently founding an astronomy club. Working to increase languages visibility also makes me well-placed to support students doing the year abroad. I know how to get ideas heard and would be honoured to represent you all in the spaces that matter.
