DISCLAIMER 1: This manifesto is not a CV. Being a good Year 1 Academic Representative isn’t about excelling academically. It’s about being someone you can count on to listen to your concerns, support you when the course turns into an uphill battle, and drive change so that this cohort succeeds as a whole. And that is who I aspire to become.
DISCLAIMER 2: I cannot pass First Year for you. But I can promise to address 3 key areas to ensure that you are fairly represented.
- I will make everyone’s voice heard. I plan to introduce an anonymous feedback form, in case you feel uncomfortable about messaging directly. No opinion should go unheard.
- Using this written and spoken feedback, I will focus on concrete issues, synthesising your perspectives into the best solutions to achieve real change.
- After meeting up with Departmental Reps and Academic Staff, I will send you regular updates outlining what was addressed, and the conclusions that were reached. No “mysterious” meetings with intangible results.
THE GOOD NEWS: I am Alex, a fellow first-year MechEng student who is really pumped up by the prospect of representing you this year. I look forward to succeeding together and will always be available as your rep, and as your friendly classmate.
