Mechanical Engineering (UG): Year One Academic Representative

Hi, I’m Viren, standing to be your ME1 Academic Representative because I want our course to be demanding for one reason only: the engineering. We should solve engineering problems, not guess submission requirements, struggle to follow lectures, lack sufficient structured support or face deadline pileups.

We are here to become better problem solvers and communicators. Academic representation should absolutely be about grades, achievement and learning, but university should not become only Mechanical Engineering. Our year includes people happiest in the lab, on the pitch, making music, building societies, seeing friends or quietly finding their feet away from home. I want to be the academic rep who remembers that good academic organisation gives people time and headspace for the parts of university that matter to them too.

As your rep, I will listen properly, take clear feedback to staff, and report back to you rather than letting it disappear into yet another feedback form. Having spoken with ME2 and ME3 students, I have heard recurring frustrations:

  • Clear assignment briefs: what is due, when, and how to submit it
  • More structured support/tutorials across the course
  • Reliable and usable learning resources
  • Earlier identification of deadline clashes, with changes sought where justified

I can promise to be approachable, persistent and transparent. If you want a rep who takes grades seriously without forgetting wellbeing, free time, and the life we came here to build, vote Viren.

Less confusion, More engineering, More time.
