Nilani Nithiyananthan
As the current academic representative for the Cardiovascular Sciences iBSc, I understand the importance of creating an academically supportive and engaging year for the next cohort of medical students. I also understand firsthand the challenges of the course, from project selection to preparing for unfamiliar assessment styles. Personally, I have seen how valuable guidance from older years can be, and how much unnecessary stress can be avoided when clear advice is available early from students who have been through it before.
Alongside this, I bring a strong background in education, teaching and teamwork. I have 7.5 years of experience as a tutor, teaching GCSE and A-level science and maths. This role has strengthened my ability to explain complex concepts clearly and tailor teaching towards the students' needs. Furthermore, my previous experience across multiple societies as secretary, treasurer, sponsorship officer, liaison officer and publicity officer has allowed me to develop my skills as a team player who can support other committee members when needed.
Aims:
- Mentorship scheme - pairing current iBSc students with former students for personalised academic advice, with incentives for mentors eg certificates
- Teaching series - targeted sessions taught by former students on how to succeed in every in-course assessment (ICA), building on what has been done previously, but making it more consistent and accessible to all students
Overall, I want every Cardiovascular iBSc student to feel supported, informed and confident throughout the academic year. Thank you for taking the time to read this! I would really appreciate your support and vote!
