Sally Doong
Hi! I'm Sally and you might know me as your Year 2 Academic Representative or Publicity Officer for the Women in Physics Society (WNBiP). This year, I helped organise physics events such as the 'meet the lecturers' breakfast and research talks with PhySoc for International Women's Day. I also took the initiative to coordinate a panel Q&A for first-years to provide advice on summer projects.
I believe these experiences align closely with the responsibilities of VP(O). These would be my priorities:
1) more collaborative academic events, start/end of term socials, and opportunities to recognise student achievement (like in QUIRK+ and UG colloquia!).
2) careers provision: particularly pathways beyond academia, support and mentoring for earlier years.
3) maximise financial support from the department and sponsors to fund events like xmas dinner... and potentially international trips?!💸
I'd like to also use my role as VP to engage seriously with widening participation work. Recently, I’ve been discussing with the department, PhySoc, and WNBiP to formalise an outreach programme that would create potentially paid opportunities to work with secondary students from underrepresented backgrounds. I want to ensure this becomes something concrete and properly implemented.
Why vote for me? I deliver under pressure (lab reports can confirm this), and I’m quick to reply (especially when it comes to physics and reels). I will be proactive and outcome-driven, and I would never let PhySoc be 2nd worst in the country.
If you want a VP who will follow through, I would really value your support! :)
