DoCSoc: Webmaster

jay@huxley-308:~$ cat ~/manifesto

Hai - I'm Jay, a first year in Computing. If you've gone to ICHack, you've almost certainly interacted with something I worked on!

What do you know about "webmaster"?

I've ran my own Ubuntu webserver since Year 10, hosting websites, private Minecraft servers, Discord bots for 110k+ members, and even a mail server at one point (It's not worth the pain. Use gmail.). From this, I know my way around a command line and am familiar with webmaster-ing, fixing broken SQL databases, nginx configs, and more.

Okay, but what does that mean for DocSoc?

This year, it meant setting up the ICHack Discord and verification system, as well as working on the website. Some of the specific things I worked on include the sponsor interactions system, sidequest & signup logic (the points on the homepage), Firebase rules, and both fashion & function of the profile page. On the day, I was trapped in a room with the other tech admins dealing with issues ranging from from "My team page broke D:" to "I forgot to submit before the deadline!".

Great, what about next year?

Before ICHack, I had never worked on a dynamic website before, let alone one this big. I believe my contribution to the site showcases my quick learning and ability to adapt, key traits a webmaster should have. No matter the stack of DocSoc's systems, I'm confident I'll be able to both look after them and build new ones as necessary.
