Rae Tang
Hi everyone!
I'm Rae :) I was elected to be a committee member under a placeholder role, back when this was still Botanical society, and I've since supported the expansion of the society into Nature and Wildlife society! Since coming to Imperial, I've always wanted to start a fungi club (or MycoSoc), and I'm very excited to finally start one as part of Nature and Wildlife society.
Here are some shortlisted events that I would like to plan, as the Fungi Coordinator:
- Fungi walks and forays, including collaborations with other nature groups in London, and other societies at Imperial
- More indoor events! These can include film screenings, book/journal clubs centred around nature/fungi, arts and crafts (spore printing, paper making), pub quizzes
- Macrofungi identification workshop
- Plant and fungal sciences symposium
Rest assured that it's not all mushrooms and visible fruiting bodies! I hope to bring more attention to fungal taxa that get less attention (etc. aquatic fungi, lichens!) and other non-fungal taxa that mycologists tend to study alongside fungi, such as slime mould.
If you've spent more than 5 minutes talking to me, you've probably heard me mention fungi! Some of my related experiences include:
- Working at a mushroom farm/mycelium design studio
- Identifying and vouchering macrofungi at a herbarium
- Looking at ectomycorrhizal fungi under the microscope
- Studying plant-pathogen interactions!
- Before this starts to sound like my CV... I also like going on slow walks to look for fungi :)
See you at the next MycoSoc event, hopefully?😆
