Theda Chan
ESE has one of the most diverse student bodies in Imperial. I believe that it is one of our greatest strengths; what makes our teaching and research world-class, which is why I want to continue promoting this culture by acting as the bridge between the department and you. My unique knowledge of various cultures and my fluency in 3 languages (English, Mandarin and Cantonese!) grant me the ability to empathise and connect with people from all walks of life. I care deeply that every voice, no matter how small, or how big, is heard and accounted for.
Back in Hong Kong, as the Youth Council president, I was in charge of the communication between my chapter and Mother’s Choice (a local charity). I was also the one who introduced the first anonymous complaint box for the student union and societies. My experience dealing with feedback that concerns multiple parties makes me confident in leading the role of academic representative.
As the year 1 representative, I will focus on reflecting your feedback and ensuring that concrete action follows, particularly with an emphasis on lecture/workshop structure, feedback, and assessment/assignment formats. Aside from an anonymous feedback system, I will also arrange 1-on-1 meetings with all students to ensure that your opinions can be expressed with confidence.
Having dealt with the frustration of nothing ever changing in school myself, allow me to reassure you that I will do my very best to make sure that the changes you want to see happen, happen.
