Why Sustainability Officer?

I believe it's a role everyone should strive to embody everyday, whether standing for election or not :)

If the student society of our cutting-edge department doesn't blaze a sustainable trail, then who will?

I've made sure to embed sustainability into my Design Study project; I am directing our team through a process of nesting, life-cycle analysis and responsible materials selection, so that we are actually practicing what we preach.

What do I hope to achieve?

Reduction in AI usage across MatSoc - AI is depleting our freshwater and energy resources at an unprecedented rate, so decreasing our reliance on it is my priority. This will be achieved by pooling and preserving resources so that future teams don't have to create them from scratch, and drafting event ideas manually instead of with prompts.

Elimination of food waste at MatSoc events - utmost attention will be drawn to not over-ordering food, and any leftovers will be re-distributed on the same day or as soon as otherwise possible (a practice we have already implemented at the Iftar).

Use of recycled materials for merchandise - as we (yes, WE) all learned in Origins 1, recycling requires WAY less energy than manufacturing something from scratch. Any opportunity to make a more sustainable material choice will be implemented straightaway.
