Larion Aklan
Hi everyone, I’m Larion, a second-year Physics student, and I have ideas to improve the Physics Society, so I’ve decided to run for committee. I’m passionate about science communication and outreach, so I want to channel this passion into PhySoc as I believe PhySoc has a responsibility towards communicating Physics to non-physicists.
My ideas focus on three areas: outreach to high school students, interdisciplinary programmes, and general public outreach.
Outreach to prospective Imperial Physics students:
- Weekend/afternoon lecture series delivered by professors and students on research or topics beyond the secondary school curriculum.
- Physics competitions organised by PhySoc for high school students.
- Panel discussions.
- Talks and experiments during school classes.
Interdisciplinary programmes: collaborations with other science and non-academic societies to explore how physics connects with other disciplines and broaden our horizons. For example:
- Joint conferences with other departments focused on science communication.
- Opening lab tours, lecture series, and events to other societies.
- Lobbying for Physics students to access resources from other societies, such as free tasters.
General public outreach: I want to launch the PhySoc magazine—a physical or digital publication for students interested in journalism or science communication to publish their work—possibly in collaboration with Felix or the RCSU Broadsheet to create a Physics-exclusive publication.
If your curious about any of these ideas, feel free to reach out to me and we can discuss them further. Thanks for reading it through! See you around!
