Jessica Yu
Hi, I’m Jessica, a first-year Physics student running for Outreach Officer in Physoc.
I’m applying because I believe outreach to young students at GCSE and A-Level is incredibly important. From my own experience, events such as summer schools and university talks sparked my interest in physics far beyond the classroom. Outreach has the power to shift physics from something studied to something experienced, and I would love to help create those moments for others.
As this is a new role, I’m excited by the opportunity to shape it. I would aim to:
- Organise talks for the general public
- Increase Physoc involvement in summer schools and open days
- Build connections with local outreach initiatives, such as the Great Exhibition Road Festival and the Science Museum
I understand that meaningful outreach requires long-term planning. If some initiatives cannot be delivered this year, I will prioritise building sustainable structures and partnerships so that future events are easier to run and expand.
Although I’m new to the department, I bring relevant experience. As a volunteer at the Science Museum, I regularly engage with young people and families, which has helped me understand what genuinely captures students’ interest. Our training also covers effective outreach strategies, and I would love to adapt some of those approaches for Physoc.
Thank you for considering me — I’d really value your ideas and feedback, so please feel free to come and chat to me!
