Plastic Surgery: Microsurgery Conference Chair

Hi, I’m Alice!

Microsurgery really interests me because of the level of precision and technical skill it demands. The ability to reconnect tiny vessels and nerves to restore function and form is an incredible example of how surgical technique can dramatically improve patient outcomes.

Having been on committee this year and helping behind the scenes at our conferences, I’ve seen how much planning goes into creating events that are both educational and inspiring for students. This has motivated me to take on a larger role next year and help organise a microsurgery conference that is both engaging and well structured.

I’d prioritise securing speakers early and inviting surgeons from different subspecialties who use microsurgery in their practice — such as breast, hand, head & neck, and limb trauma reconstruction surgery — to show the breadth of the field. I would also aim to organise hands-on skills stations where students could practise using loupes and fine suturing techniques and gain an appreciation of the dexterity required in microsurgery.

For the conference theme, I’d be excited to explore something like “Microsurgery Across Sub-Specialities”, highlighting the diverse ways microsurgical techniques are used in modern reconstruction.

My goal is to help organise a conference that is well-run, engaging, and inspiring for students interested in microsurgery.
