Maurika Vathanan
Following my GP placement, I developed a genuine passion for pursuing a career in General Practice. I was inspired by the diversity of cases, the continuity of care, and the holistic approach GPs take in managing patients within their communities. GP is far more than many perceive — it encompasses paediatrics, mental health, women’s health, chronic disease management, safeguarding, leadership, and preventative medicine.
I am applying for GP Conference Chair because I want to broaden perspectives around this career path. At Imperial, General Practice can sometimes feel overlooked or dismissed. I want to challenge that narrative by showcasing the breadth, complexity, and impact of a GP career.
Having supported and helped organise multiple conferences, I have developed strong organisational, communication, and teamwork skills. I understand the importance of structured planning, speaker coordination, budgeting, and delivering a high-quality, engaging event.
As Conference Chair, I would aim to:
-
Invite speakers who represent the diverse pathways within General Practice
-
Highlight portfolio careers and innovative GP roles
-
Include interactive workshops reflecting real-world GP practice
-
Create space for honest discussions about the rewards and challenges of the profession
-
Inspire students to see GP as a first-choice, dynamic and fulfilling career
I would really appreciate your vote so that I can hopefully inspire other students to consider GP as their first choice career.
