Hi, I’m Arafat, a first-year medical student, and I am running to be your Education Officer for ICSM Coding. Having attended several ICSM Coding events and taken part in the Python and R online course this year, I clearly see the enormous potential for this society to grow. I know firsthand that coding is an increasingly essential skill in modern medicine, particularly for research and clinical auditing, and I want to help expand our educational reach.
My journey into medicine is deeply intertwined with a strong interest in health-tech. Over the past year, I’ve immersed myself in this space - participating in two major hackathons and developing my own AI ed-tech platform. I am far from a coding mastermind, I am a medical student actively learning to build. Because of this, I understand exactly the hurdles beginners face when learning to code, and I know how to make technical concepts highly digestible.
As Education Officer, my core aim is to widen access to coding for all medical students. I plan to achieve this by encouraging more frequent, beginner-friendly workshops and expanding our practical, project-based learning. Building on the success of the Python and R courses, I want to design sessions that are highly clinically relevant.
Delivering great education requires solid organization. Having served as the Social Media Officer for Imperial MedTech and a Fresher Rep for Muslim Medics, I have proven experience managing communications, engaging with members, and handling the behind-the-scenes logistics that keep a committee running smoothly.
