Ruslana Mudra
From early in medical school, I have been strongly interested in surgery, particularly neurosurgery, and have actively sought opportunities to develop both my practical skills and academic understanding. In first year, I took part in BISA, where I was taught both basic and advanced suturing techniques, which sparked my enthusiasm for surgical skills from the outset.
Alongside this, I have attended numerous Specialty Spotlight events, gaining insight into a wide range of surgical fields, as well as conferences such as Foundation Skills in Surgery. I have also participated in the Royal College of Surgeons of England Surgical Skills Competition, experiences which have further strengthened my commitment to pursuing a surgical career.
Beyond skills and conferences, I have become involved in research across several surgical specialties. Through this, I have seen how challenging it can be for students to find projects, mentors, and guidance, particularly in the early years. As Research Representative, I would work to create clearer pathways for students to get involved in surgical research.
My aims would include developing mentorship schemes to connect students with research active surgeons and supervisors, helping members find projects suited to their interests. I would also like to organise practical workshops on how to conduct different types of research, including systematic reviews and meta analyses, equipping students with the tools and confidence to contribute meaningfully to academic surgery.
I am proactive, organised, and passionate about widening access to research opportunities. I would be honoured to support and represent you as Surgical Research Representative.
