Zaara Mir

Psychiatry: Secretary

I am a second-year medical student with a strong academic interest in psychiatry, particularly in the cognitive and behavioural mechanisms that underpin mental illness.

I currently serve as Social Secretary and Publicity Officer for the Imperial Medics Women’s Football Team. Managing both roles simultaneously has required organisation, clear communication, and planning. I coordinate events and manage communications, ensuring initiatives are delivered efficiently. Balancing these responsibilities with medical school and competitive sport has strengthened my time management and accountability - qualities essential for a strong Secretary.

As Secretary, my priority would be ensuring the committee operates efficiently and transparently. This would include:

  • Maintaining clear, consistent internal communication within committee
  • Organising structured meeting agendas and recording accurate minutes
  • Ensuring timely follow-up on action points
  • Supporting smooth coordination of initiatives such as PsychStart Mentoring and the Open Minds Programme
  • Overseeing administrative processes to ensure continuity between committees

PsychStart Mentoring provides students with invaluable access to psychiatrists for research, audit, and placement guidance. Efficient coordination and communication are essential to its success, and I would ensure allocation, updates, and documentation are managed clearly.

Similarly, Open Minds Programme - delivering mental health education to Year 7–10 students - requires strong organisation and reliability to maintain consistency. I would support this through careful planning and structured oversight.

The role of Secretary is foundational: it ensures ideas translate into action. I am used to managing responsibility, working within committees, and delivering consistently rather than reactively. I would bring structure, dependability, and sustained commitment to the role.
