Larion Aklan
Hey, I’m Larion, a second-year Physics student, and I have some ideas to make careers support stronger and to swcure more sponsorships in PhySoc to make it easier for undergrads and postgrads to navigate the job market. While individual preparation is important, PhySoc can play a key role in making the process easier, and more accessible for everyone.
What I would maintain and improve:
1. Continue PhD, Master’s, and Careers panels, ensuring they are announced well in advance.
2. Maintain strong relationships with current sponsors while building deeper collaborations.
New initiatives:
Careers
1. Launch a “Know-How” talk series led by students who have completed placements, internships, or UROPs, sharing practical advice.
- Create a collaborative spreadsheet summarising opportunities for Physics students, including application tips and past student experiences.
- Since UROPs can be mysterious for students so I would develop a comprehensive UROP resource pack explaining bursaries, how to contact researchers, funding, and timelines—supported by panels and talks.
- Work towards Physics-exclusive careers events by partnering with firms in finance, engineering, research, and academia that actively recruit Physics students.
- Organise internal competitions & promote external competitions and opportunities that strengthen CVs, while supporting access to relevant resources.
Sponsorships
To fund these initiatives:
- Approach finance and engineering firms with data on Physics graduate destinations to secure targeted sponsorships.
- Build alumni connections for sponsorship, networking, and career insight talks.
