Physics: Events Officer

My name is Filippos (Philip) Akylas Kaloudis and I am a second-year undergraduate running for Events Officer of the Physics Society.

Throughout my two years in the Physics Department, I have participated in numerous PhySoc events that have significantly shaped my experience at Imperial, helping me develop invaluable skills and build lasting friendships. However, most events appear to be addressed solely to physics students. Despite PhySoc’s departmental role, I believe it should try to broadly represent and appeal to students liking Physics across Imperial. PhySoc should both be an invaluable resource for us physics students and unite students interested in Physics across Imperial. I believe this can be achieved through events such as:

  • Physics-related hackathons: organising hackathons around real-world physics problems can bring together students across departments to develop new skills.
  • Student-led masterclasses on topics underpinned by Physics (e.g. quantum computing), offering skills-based courses with professional applications.
  • Reinvigorating physics families by regularising family activities (card games, pub crawls, etc.) throughout the year, strengthening bonds between different years in the Department.
  • Hosting a flagship competition open to students across universities: building on the QUIRK Conferences, PhySoc could organise a competition or similar event at Imperial to build inter-university connections and solidify our leading role amongst UK Physics societies.
  • Increasing collaboration with other societies for more diverse opportunities and cross-College connections.

I will focus on amplifying PhySoc’s strength in quality events. By expanding scope and visibility within Imperial and beyond, I will elevate the society’s impact and maximise the value it offers.
