こんにちは! I’m Madeleine, a current Economics, Finance and Data Science student, running to be your new Language Director! I've lived in the US, Hong Kong and Japan (my grandma is from Fujisawa, Japan). I’ve been learning Japanese since I was young, starting by attending a Japanese preschool. I understand the struggles of learning such a complicated language like Japanese as I’ve been learning it as a second language my whole life. I also took IB Japanese A (native level Japanese) in high school and received a bilingual diploma.
I believe the best way to keep students motivated when learning a language is to make the classes engaging while also using worksheets to help retain information. As a language director I will:
- Teach Japanese through Anime, J-Pop and Kahoots
- Create worksheets that align with what is taught in class
- Host cultural events to play games like Karuta (Japanese card game) so students can practice Japanese while immersing themselves in Japanese culture
- I personally know the current Queen Mary Language Officer and Career Coordinator, so we can easily host joint events
- Continue to use the buddy system for teachers
- Host beginning, intermediate, advanced and JLPT classes (I have experience taking the JLPT so I can better direct the classes)
I understand the amount of work teachers need to put in. Therefore, I will collaborate with other committee members to provide discounted rates to events for the teachers. I hope to create a welcoming learning environment as a language officer. よろしくおねがいします!
