Chemistry: President
If you're unfamiliar with me, my name is Joel, and over the last year, I served as the Year 2 academic rep, with the goal of improving our education. I've helped improve UROPs resources for next year and regularly collected and shared student feedback with lecturers.
Next year, I aim to make ChemSoc a strong community. Building on the strength of our coffee drop-ins and the Christmas dinner. I plan to host a variety of events, such as a ChemFamily pub crawl at the start of the year, followed by boat parties and summer cocktail parties, because we deserve to go out. Another step I'll take is to improve the family-finding process so you can find families you stick with. Unfortunately, many families break up or don't talk after the first day each year, leaving ChemFamilies splintered. I plan to create first-term mixers, where students can build extended networks.
I want to build an environment where students strive to discover and research, and leave with a sense of what is out there for their future. This means hosting events that explain how to publish novel research and help students find research opportunities, inviting guest speakers from several industries. I believe our society can become a national hub for chemistry students by building bridges with other universities, allowing students to network and innovate.
Finally, I intend to encourage the committee to actively seek out and secure sponsorships, so we can fund more events and opportunities for everyone in ChemSoc.
