Surgical: Chair

Hello all!

I’m Antony, and I’m excited to run for Surgical Society President.

Last year, I was deeply involved with SurgSoc and other ICSM societies. I led the year’s standout event: the International Orthopaedics Conference, which drew 120+ students and trainees nationwide, secured sponsorship from 8+ leading medical firms, and delivered 8 hands-on workshops alongside 6 world‑renowned speakers.

I’ve also gained a clear view of what makes SurgSoc work through marketing every SurgSoc event this year and attending most of them. Beyond that, I helped organise the first National Undergraduate Endocrinology Conference in collaboration with UCL and Barts, giving me practical experience in high-impact partnerships and smooth delivery.

Next year, I want to elevate SurgSoc’s education and networking through four practical initiatives:

  • SurgSoc Shadowing Scheme: Each term, connect 1st–2nd years with Imperial surgeons for a one‑day shadowing opportunity to explore different specialties first‑hand.

  • Research Starter Programme: Pair students with committee mentors, with stronger support and clearer pathways via our Research Rep to help members secure projects and increase committee outputs.

  • Inter‑Uni Surgical Collaboration: Run at least one joint conference per year with another UK SurgSoc, rotating campuses to widen access, expand speakers, and open doors to multi‑centre research, mentorship and skills.

  • Monthly SurgSoc Journal Club: Teach practical critical appraisal (PICO + a simple checklist), with a one‑page takeaway so members can translate evidence into better clinical decisions.

Thank you for reading and I’d be honoured to earn your vote and serve you next year.
