Physics: President

Hey, I’m Larion from second-year Physics, and I’m running for PhySoc president, because I have a few ideas that I would implement to make PhySoc better. Due to the word limit, I will leave out the yapping and focus on my ideas.

  1. PhySoc Challenges: a competition where each week/month the PhySoc committee would post a challenging Physics problem, and announce the winner based on weekly submissions. Prizes for the winners (if we can get sponsors). I would also encourage students to submit problems.
  2. Workshops/Clubs: study groups organised around one topic. Every 1-2 weeks, students would gather and listen to discuss a topic outside the curriculum. This could provide a place for literature review, discussing research opportunities, and fostering connections to the department’s respective research groups.
  3. Mentoring Scheme: we have wonderful alumni working in various places across academia and industry, so why not reach out to them? This programme would entail a 1:1 connection with an alumnus/a and it could mean longer-term mentoring or a one-off meeting.
  4. Reforming PhySoc parents: more emphasis on exchanging experiences, mentoring, etc, recommended check-ups, meetups after fresher’s week.
  5. Communication: advertise events earlier, sharing schedules for the month.

There are, of course, many good things that I would keep and develop them further next year, maybe try to have more free pizza.

Thanks for reading it through. If you have any thoughts on these or have any other suggestions, feel free to reach out to me and we can discuss further. Anyways, see you around.
