Saim Khan
Hey everyone! Saim here, running to be your President for next year :) Having joined the society at the start of this year and since then spent almost every single Tuesday, Thursday and weekend debating, judging or convening, I would now like to stand to lead our society, drawing on some of my experience as my school debate society's founding, inaugural President. Here are three (structural) reasons that you should vote for me!
Firstly, commitment: I've turned up to sessions with maybe the most regularity (with only perhaps Xiong having attended a session or two more); this means as President, I would be there for each session to make draws, fight for rooms being overrun by other societies, encourage new novices etc.
Secondly, I've made lots of friends on the circuit across both novices and more experienced debaters, so in terms of arranging trialists, CAs, cross-uni collaboration events and inviting guest speakers for workshops, I'm the best connected and thus best placed to do this.
Thirdly, in terms of debating skill, recent competitions / trials have shown that I'm among the strongest speakers at the society, which contributes to our overall standing on the circuit.
Ideas I have include inviting more reppy debaters to give workshops for the society, drawing on both our own alumni (e.g., Chris Mentis) but also following in the steps of LSE and UCL who've recently secured workshops from Enting and Dylan, and bringing back Imperial Science Open (we need more STEM on the circuit :)
