Let’s admit, the world is a complicated place. While there are positive things here and there, thousands of horrifying things out of our control happen every single day. Between personal life, academic stress, and adulting, one might feel small against the vastness of issues out there. That is why we have charities: They allow us to support causes we believe in without feeling powerless as individuals. But charities need funding, and it matters where that funding goes.

I’m Defne, and as your RAG Officer, I will do my best to organise charity events that feel like a part of your university experience instead of an obligation. I plan to organise a Queen’s Lawn movie night, giving you a chance to spend an evening on campus outside the library walls, and create RCSU merch that you will actually want to buy. But along with being open to new ideas to raise money, I will also ensure that money goes somewhere that matters. Because we did not just fall out of a coconut tree — and our actions matter in the mess of this world. We may not be able to control everything happening around us, but we can make sure our efforts are spent for the sake of goodness.
