I'll be a 4th year Computing MEng student next year. I held this role last year, mostly resurrecting/remaking stuff that used to be there before the gap when DocSoc didn't have and academic coordinator (eg. Deep Dives). I normally wouldn't be interested in running again, but I've gotten quite invested in the idea of seeing a student-centric academic conference at DoC. As I've studied more, the things I want to learn only keeps growing rather than shrinking. There are so many fascinating topics in computer science which an undergrad curriculum cannot hope to fully cover. And many people I know are working on these, mostly for their final year projects. When I was a first year, I would have loved to have gotten glimpses into these fields and get excited about areas such as Programming Language Research, Cryptography or exotic ways of ML. And I still like to ask people to explain their projects and subtopic.
TLDR; I want to run a day long conference of student talks which will hopefully perpetuate through the years becoming a staple of DoCSoc. It would be even nicer if these were held jointly with anotehr Uni, and we held two of them one here and one there (with students travelling for free to attend the "away" conference).
Of course I'd also run the regular talks (DeepDives and 101s) as well.
