Hi, I’m Maz and I’m excited to run for Vice President! I have been thoroughly inspired by the field of O&G throughout university, from the incredible speakers and workshop leads at the ICOGs conferences, to the amazing doctors I have met on placement (I remember being in awe the first time I saw a c-section - it was so hardcore!), to the fascinating research I’ve been able to get stuck into during my Repro BSc year.
Whilst O&G is as an immensely rewarding and varied field, it also comes with challenges, demands and responsibility. It is heart-breaking how far behind we are in this field, due to history built on misogyny which still runs through to today. Whilst the UK might be relatively “progressive” in our access to female health services, the rights of female-bodied people are in constant threat around the world.
This is why I believe as Vice President, it is incredibly important to promote awareness and understanding of O&G within the medical school, through events, seminars, and workshops that will contribute to the continuous education of members, ensuring we stay abreast of the latest advancements in the field. In addition, I will implement a mentorship programme connecting students with experienced professionals to inspire the next generation.
I have shown commitment to the society through my roles as Catering Officer in this year’s Subcommittee, as well as delivering tutorials for ICOGS for early years, and believe I have the necessary contacts and skills in organisation to honour this role.
