I’m Raine, and I would love to be your next ACS president! I have so many plans for our beloved society! The following are five main ideas I will try my best to implement if elected:
1. Increasing Representation
- Encourage members from North, East and South Africa, as well as the Caribbean (African diaspora)
- Welcome everyone interested in Caribbean/African culture
2. Increase Exposure
Educate ourselves about our cultures
- Host Culture Nights: invite representatives from countries to discuss and celebrate a nation’s food, language, religion, traditional dress, etc
3. We are an ACS Family!
- Reduce the corporate feel
- Host more regular social events: watch parties (for big sports events/pop culture entertainment), girls’/guys’ nights and more parties in general
- Creating ACS sports teams that train and compete regularly
4. Be more Inclusive!
More events targeted to strengthen relations between academic year groups
- “The Future of our Homeland” – The Debate: debating ideas for improving the socio-political and economic state of Africa and the Caribbean
- ACS’ Got Talent: an opportunity to perform in front of judges for a prize (a possible UoL event)
- What Ya Drinking?: learn to make cocktails/mocktails
5. Increasing Community Outreach Activities
- Giving back to less-fortunate communities
- Clean-up Campaign: Designing anti-litter art to be posted around community areas
- Partnering with local sanitation services and other volunteer groups to pick up litter from the streets.
- Mentorship programmes: partnering with local schools/colleges to visit and give talks to students.
