Oliver Coombes

Hi, I'm Oliver a 2^nd year Geophysics student and I'm running to be your Academic Dep Rep for 2024. You may know me from both RSM Hockey and playing lacrosse at Bottle this year.

As Academic Dep Rep, I will be dedicated to amplifying your voices and improving your educational experience, providing a student-first attitude. I aim to be approachable, and effectively communicate all student feedback to faculty / teaching staff by working closely with our Academic Rep team.

Having both secondary and sixth form teaching experience I have a unique perspective to how academics works for students and staff. I am a firm believer that university education is not just for exams, but to expand the breadth and depth of our subject knowledge.

For 2024 I plan to maintain excellent levels of communication between our departmental faculty and student body. I also wish to introduce reforms to the Mid-term survey. I believe that the survey fails to be representative of all students (1 in 7 Y2 geophysicists gave a response in 2023) and needs improvement in how quality of education is measured. To tackle this, I intend to find new approaches to student feedback that have higher levels of interaction, possibly utilising social media, and find questions that are better suited to overall quality of education within our surveys.

I will provide all I can to ensure your voices are heard and get action from the department.
