Zihan Yin
Microbiome: Events Officer
Hi guys, I'm Han, a 2nd Year BMB student!
I've analysed HMP2 gut microbiome data in Python/SQL, comparing Crohn’s, UC and non-IBD samples with proper statistical testing, written three academic articles on the microbiome. So as you can tell, I'm super passionate about the microbiome.
As events officer, I'd like to run:
- A hands-on fermentation workshop series, make your own kombucha, kimchi, or sourdough and learn the microbiology behind it as you go.
- Access to the field: organise a lab/research tour so members see real microbiome research in action.
- A “Culture Club” tasting night sampling fermented foods from around the world, and joint socials with other societies.
- An industry night. Invite speakers from a microbiome biotech or diagnostics startup (Zoe, Seed, or similar), structured as a Q&A and networking.
- Feedback that actually changes things. A short form after every event, reviewed by committee before planning the next one.
Drawing from my own experience as Academic Representative, I have experienced the importance of turning feedback into real change. I pushed module leads to act on survey results instead of letting them collect dust, I'd bring the same approach as the Events Officer by asking what you'd really want instead of guessing.
Vote for Han :)
