Mariya Pozdeyeva

I joined the Ballroom & Latin Dance Team as a novice in 2016 after coming from other dance styles, and nearly ten years have flown by since then.

Three things made me want to stay and continue growing on the team. First, the opportunity to learn from world-class coaches, whose knowledge and dedication have helped so many of us achieve things we never thought possible. Second, the sense of community: sharing successes and challenges, and inspiring one another to improve. Third, the generosity of more experienced dancers, whose advice and encouragement made the learning process welcoming rather than intimidating.

Having previously served on the committee, I've seen first-hand how much work goes into creating the opportunities and environment that make the team special. It's also shown me the importance of listening to members and ensuring everyone feels supported, regardless of experience level.

If elected captain, I want to help ensure that anyone joining the team today has the same positive experience that made me want to stay all those years ago. I want the team to be a place where new dancers feel welcome, experienced dancers feel challenged and motivated, and everyone has opportunities to improve and achieve their goals. Most importantly, I want everyone to experience the joy, fulfilment, confidence, and the positive impact on wellbeing that dance can bring.

This team has given me so much over the past decade, I would be honoured to give back as captain and help it continue to grow and thrive.
