Saba Afzali
Assalamu alaikum,
My name is Saba, and I’m running to be VP of outreach and wellbeing.
Over the past 2 years on Muslim Medics, as both a fresher rep and secretary, I’m grateful to have contributed to the many impactful initiatives MM held. From helping at the Gaza conference and hosting the MM iftars during my first year, to helping organise the MM Conference and careers fair, these experiences helped me grow both personally and within the society. I’m eager to use the skills developed towards a stronger sense of community and meaningful outreach within MM.
As VP of outreach and wellbeing, I aim to continue building a Muslim Medics community that supports students both professionally and personally throughout medical school, building on the strong O+W foundations and the introduction of:
- An alumni mentorship scheme: connecting doctors to students based on speciality interests
- Expansion of the careers fair to include specialities that students are interested in
- A Women in Medicine/Surgery event: addressing challenges specific to Muslim women in the field, e.g confidance, hijab and family life.
- The return of the Gaza conference: expanded into a broader humanitarian conference focused on medical injustices affecting communities globally.
- Further support during Ramadan to encourage reflection, growth and community throughout the month
- Resources on navigating placements and making the most of clinical opportunities.
Overall, as VP of O+W, I hope to strengthen MM as a source of support and opportunity, collaborating with the Education and PotMed streams to create a more connected student journey.
