Bioscience Review: Secretary

Hi, I’m Joanne La! I’m a first-year Biology student.

My interests and values in science research align with the missions of IBR, focusing on helping writers develop while covering interesting themes in life sciences. I am well versed in science communication, having written published papers on biosciences in the past on innovative technology. I’ve written a review paper on target metabolic peptides during my internship at D&D Pharmatech, covering 15+ research papers on a novel medication target and presenting key findings, interpretations, and suggestions to R&D and product leaders. Additionally, I have experience running similar writing communities before starting at Imperial; I was the founder and Editor-in-Chief of a school publication, hosting workshops for journalism skills and hosting regular meetings to keep people involved.

As Secretary, I'd focus on the practical, day-to-day things that make IBR consistent year-long:

  • Editorial Admin: tracking submissions, confirmations, minutes.
  • More advertisement for pitch/idea banks, quick feedback
  • Clearer communication
  • Host more meetings to help the community feel engaged

I am comfortable with routine admin and organisation from past secretary-style roles throughout the years, and I genuinely enjoy research and writing projects from my experience writing and publishing bioscience pieces before.

If elected, I will aim to make IBR feel organised, welcoming, and active.
