Oncology: Palliative care officer

Hello everyone, I’m Eda Bakay, an aspiring final-year Biological Sciences student, and I am applying for the role of Palliative Care Officer because I believe oncology is not only about treating disease but also about preserving dignity, comfort, and compassion for patients and their families. My motivation for this role comes from both scientific interest and a strong commitment to patient wellbeing.

I have research experience in ovarian cancer, having worked at Koç University’s KUTTAM Research Center and Koç University Hospital, where I gained insight into cancer biology and the importance of compassionate care alongside medical treatment. Alongside my academic experience, I have volunteered in hospitals in my home country, supporting patients in challenging healthcare settings, and I will begin volunteering with the NHS this summer term to continue serving people in need.

I plan to pursue postgraduate training in either Graduate Entry Medicine or Dietetics, with a strong interest in oncology and patient-centred healthcare. As Palliative Care Officer, I would aim to organise talks, workshops, and charity collaborations to raise awareness of palliative care and highlight its importance in improving quality of life for patients and their families. If elected, I will bring empathy, dedication, and initiative to the role and help the Oncology Society foster a compassionate and supportive community.
