General Practice (ICSM): Early Years Representative

Hi, I’m Lamisah, a Second year Medic running to be the Early Years Representative!

For many of us, this is the first time we’re really thinking about which specialties we might be interested in. At this stage, joining societies and exploring their events is one of the best ways to navigate that decision and discover what truly interests you.

In this role, I hope to help students gain a better understanding of General Practice, ensure that early years students feel represented, and provide meaningful feedback to the committee.

I hope to use past experiences to contribute positively to this role such as:

  • Fresher Rep for Bengali Society – I learned how to be a strong voice for younger years and how to tailor events specifically to their needs.

  • Afghan Society Vice President – Liaising within a committee and ensuring events run smoothly strengthened my teamwork and organisational skills.

  • Experience Lead for the Muslim Medical Conference – I helped organise a large scale event, developing skills in coordination and planning that I hope to bring to GP Society conferences and events.

  • Muslim Medics Phase 1a Tutor – Teaching first year medical students has given me insight into how to effectively engage early years and make learning accessible and enjoyable.

Alongside this, I have mentored early years and aspiring medics in various roles. I hope to use these experiences to make General Practice more inclusive for early years students and spark their enthusiasm for the specialty.
