Sachin Sandhu
As a candidate for Research and Opportunities Officer for the Ophthalmology Society at Imperial College London, my aim is to make research more accessible, collaborative, and achievable for every student with an interest in ophthalmology. This specialty sits at the forefront of innovation, from cutting-edge imaging technologies to translational surgical advancements, and I believe our society should actively connect students to these developments. I will work to build a clear, regularly updated database of research projects, academic supervisors, conferences, essay prizes, audits, and elective opportunities, ensuring members never miss valuable experiences. By fostering strong relationships with clinicians, academic researchers, and alumni, I hope to create pathways for mentorship and meaningful involvement in projects at all levels, whether students are complete beginners or already research-active. I also plan to organise research-focused events, including abstract-writing workshops, portfolio guidance sessions, and talks from students and doctors who have successfully published or presented work. Transparency and inclusivity will be central to my approach: I want opportunities to be shared widely and early, with clear guidance on how to apply. I am proactive, organised, and committed to widening participation in academic medicine. As Research and Opportunities Officer, I will ensure our society becomes a gateway to impactful research, helping members build confidence, strengthen their portfolios, and contribute meaningfully to the future of ophthalmology.
