Hello everyone! Uni life can be confusing to navigate. As the current Year 1 Medicine Welfare Rep, I’ve been that person and the person others go to when they’re stressed, homesick, overwhelmed, or just need someone to say, “eh same lah.” Welfare is about creating trust, support, and belonging, and that deeply resonates with me.
I moved out of Malaysia at 11, and never felt like I belonged, losing my Malaysian pride. It was only when I joined ICUMS and heard that comforting “confirm one!” that I realised how much I missed home. So, if anyone understands the importance of a home away from home, it’s me. Being Malaysian overseas means craving mamak at 2am, missing CNY/Raya/Deepavali, and feeling paiseh to ask for help.
I had such a shiok time as a fresher, and I want next year’s freshers thinking, “Imperial MSoc damn solid wah!” I’d love to introduce water games and a barbecue night at camp. Chaos first, then cosy chats under the stars. First impressions matter, and I’ll do it right!
Buddy families should be safe spaces, not dead group chats. With stronger point systems, themed potlucks, and empowering first years to initiate hangouts, no one gets left behind.
I’ll secure more food sponsors (cheap and sedap obviously), bake sweet treats, prioritise exam snacks, and provide clear wellbeing and housing guidance. No suffer-in-silence culture here. If you’re struggling, we struggle together, then makan.
I promise MSoc will be warm, supportive, slightly chaotic, but always family. Confirm one lah!
