Amelia Shabir

Hi everyone! We’re Amelia and Malisha, and we’re running as Co-Presidents of the Paediatrics Society.

As current PlayTeam Chairs, we coordinate daily volunteering, managing rotas for hundreds of volunteers, handling last-minute changes, and liaising with doctors, play specialists and wider ward teams to keep sessions safe, consistent, and valuable for patients and families.

Crucially, we’ve delivered measurable improvements:

• Recruited the highest number of volunteers since PlayTeam began
  
  
• Introduced “Volunteer of the Month” to recognise and retain committed volunteers
  
  
• Launched a swap scheme in second term to boost attendance
  
  

This role has strengthened the leadership skills needed to run a society: clear communication under pressure, stakeholder management, organisation, supportive team leadership, and professional, empathetic problem-solving.

We have experience as both Paeds subcommittee and committee, plus roles in other societies as Chair, Treasurer, Secretary, Conference Subcommittee and General Committee Member, so we understand what each committee position needs to succeed and how to support the whole team.

Our vision for next year:

1) A Monthly Paeds Journal Club that builds confidence in understanding paediatric literature

2) A mentorship scheme pairing juniors with senior students and paeds trainees to provide placement and career guidance, portfolio support, and a friendlier route into paeds opportunities

3) A stronger paeds community with regular Paeds socials

As Paeds Co-Presidents, we’ll deliver a structured year with events you can trust, a committee that feels supported, and a society that’s welcoming, practical, and genuinely helpful.
