Fellwanderers (Imperial Hiking Society): Deputy President Logistics

I'm Harry and I am a second-year doing aeronautical engineering. Joining the Fellwanderers has definitely been one of the better decisions I've made while at Imperial! The Fellwanderers is unique in offering a relaxed, non-competitive space where anyone, regardless of experience or equipment, can escape academia and enjoy nature. I am looking to get involved with the committee so that the society continues to provide these opportunities as best it can!

My Experience:

I live in a village in Yorkshire with a single bus connection, so walking across the countryside has been my go-to method of transport my whole life. In the past 4 years I have been committing to longer hikes up mountains and across national landscapes. My proudest (and scariest) hike was ascending a mountain in Austria with a German fell runner (I was very slow).

Regarding the logistics role, I have experience organising events and booking tickets. My auditing job requires me to find affordable transport to new locations, so I am skilled in planning routes using various transport options. I have organised travel for trips abroad and can adapt when plans change.

My Ideas:

  • Hikes in the north: Offering more northern hikes will relieve the oversubscription on the few that are available. The Yorkshire Three Peaks and Howgill Fells come to mind.
  • Improved pre-planning: Planned stopping points in scenic locations and organised meeting points to avoid blocking station entrances and pavements.
  • Beginner friendly hikes: Offering shorter morning/evening walks (~10km) would improve inclusivity.
