Materials (UG): Departmental Academic Representative

For the past two years, I have had the honour of representing the current Y2 cohort as their academic rep. During this time, I’ve worked closely with students and staff to raise feedback, solve problems, and make sure student concerns actually lead to action (extensions, assesment modifications...). These two years have been challenging, from labs being rescheduled last minute to having two rubrics for the same assignment to non-examinable content on tests, but dialoguing with the department (and being very pushy) led to solutions that benefit students.

Through this, I’ve built a strong understanding of how the Student-Staff Committee works and how change happens. I’m now running for Departmental Academic Representative to:

  • Standardise tutorials: Make sure all students get consistent guidance and support from their tutors.

  • Improve assessment feedback: Reduce waiting times and increase the amount and usefulness of feedback.

  • Support Year Reps: Help them throughout the year so everyone’s experience is smooth and enjoyable.

  • Champion student initiatives: Make sure concerns are heard and acted on.

I’m committed to using my experience to make your academic life fairer, clearer, and more supportive.
