Ziyad Malik

Hello my name is Ziyad and I'm running for Departmental Academic Rep. Over the past year, as the undergraduate head of EDI, I’ve formed a strong bond with many senior staff in materials including the Head of Department. Alongside this I have helped shape EDI policy behind closed doors. While this was fun and I feel like my work was effective, I would love to help improve the department in a more student-facing role.

I have launched or ran:

• CV and Interview Workshops with students who interned a top global firms
• The first Materials UROP & Placement Conference (coming this year). This is helping to demystify research while setting clear goals for UROP students and creating a platform to present their work.
• An Outreach Scheme enabling students to return to their old schools and promote Materials
• First-year tuition sessions to support academic foundations
• The first Materials Alumni Mentorship Scheme, connecting students with graduates at leading institutions for 1 on 1 coaching

As Academic Rep I Will Push For:

• Mandatory course notes, especially in more abstract and difficult modules
• Greater transparency through release of mark schemes and exam scripts
• Formalising tuition sessions for all undergraduates and creating paid opportunities for older years to tutor younger years.
