Oncology: Palliative care officer

Hello everyone, I’m Eda Bakay, a second-year Biological Sciences student, and I am applying for the role of Palliative Care Officer because I believe that oncology is not only about treating disease but also about preserving dignity, comfort, and compassion for patients and their families. My motivation for this role comes from both scientific curiosity and genuine human empathy. I have worked as a ovarian cancer reserch intern at Koç University’s KUTTAM Research Center and Koç University Hospital, where I gained insight into the challenges patients face throughout cancer treatment, especially during advanced stages. I also completed an independent research project published through Polygence on the epigenetic links between DDT/PAH exposure and breast cancer risk. These experiences deepened my understanding of the emotional and clinical realities behind cancer and strengthened my commitment to patient-focused care. Beyond research, I have volunteered in hospitals in my home country, supporting patients in emotionally challenging environments, and I will also begin volunteering with the NHS this year, furthering my involvement in healthcare service. I believe palliative care is an essential aspect of oncology—one that prioritises empathy, communication, and quality of life alongside medical treatment. I aim to organise talks, workshops and charity collaborations to raise awareness about palliative care, including pain management, emotional support, and ethical decision-making in oncology. With plans to pursue a career in medicine or dietetics, I am committed to compassionate healthcare and holistic patient wellbeing.
