Hello!
I’m Gareth, a first-year biochemistry student. I’m running for Vice-Chair because I want to help shape a society that’s not only academically enriching but also inclusive and collaborative.
2 years ago, I was fortunate enough to work as an intern in New Zealand on a pilot project involving the research of generative AI in phylogenetic analyses. Reading more on deep learning models, e.g. AlphaFold in biochemical research, I was fascinated by how accurately the models can make predictions on protein structure. Computational biology has many significant implementations, e.g. accelerating drug design by identifying optimal shapes for binding sites.
Being a student at Cheltenham, UK, for the last 5 years, I have had the privilege to serve as the president of the Science society at school. Through these experiences, I have been tasked with the roles of:
- Organising guest lectures
- Coordinating inter-disciplinary research on supercurricular topics
- Relaying feedback from the general school to STEM faculty
I view this role as an opportunity to do the following:
- To grow the CompBio society and to spread awareness about the utilisation of AI methods in medicine and research
- To lead initiatives (e.g. external speakers, workshops, forums, panel discussions) that engage students across multiple departments
- To collaborate with other societies at Imperial to create cross-disciplinary events that highlight how biology and computing intersect
Finally, please feel free to reach out if you’d like to learn more about me, or if you’re as passionate about computational biology as I am.
