Eda Bakay
Hello everyone, I’m Eda Bakay, a second-year Biological Sciences student, and I’m applying for the role of Academic Officer for the Endocrinology Society. I have a strong academic interest in human physiology and metabolic disorders, and I aim to pursue a future career in medicine or dietetics, fields where endocrinology plays a central role in patient health and disease prevention. This year, I am analysing and presenting a research paper on insulin secretion and diabetes as part of my Team-Based Learning presentation, which has strengthened my understanding of glucose regulation, pancreatic function and metabolic disease. I also gained clinical exposure through volunteering and shadowing an internal medicine specialist and an endocrinologist at Acıbadem Hospital in Turkey, where I observed the diagnosis and management of diabetes and other hormone-related disorders. In addition, I worked as a research intern at Koç University’s KUTTAM Research Center, contributing to ovarian cancer research, and completed a published Polygence research project on breast cancer epigenetics, both of which developed my research skills, scientific communication and ability to critically analyse academic literature. As Academic Officer, I aim to organise research discussion groups, academic workshops and guest talks covering topics such as metabolic disease, hormone regulation, nutrition, diabetes and endocrine cancers. I want to create an active academic environment where students can engage with scientific research, explore clinical perspectives and feel supported in their academic development. Thank you:)
