Melis Nurluoglu
Hello everyone!
My name is Melis, and I’m a second-year Chemical Engineering student. Being part of WSET for over a year has been truly inspiring and welcoming. I’m very excited to be running for International Women’s Day Officer and to contribute to the planning and creative process behind one of the most meaningful events of our year.
During my last two years of high school, I was the only girl in a class of 20 students, having chosen the Science and Mathematics route. That experience showed me both the challenges and the importance of representation. It motivated me to co-found a STEM club, where we organised events to engage younger students and encourage them to explore scientific and engineering fields. I found immense joy in seeing the impact small initiatives can have, and that’s the passion I want to bring to WSET.
As IWD Officer, I aim to make International Women’s Day at Imperial truly stand out — inclusive, empowering, and memorable. My plan is to:
-
Centre events around “Breaking Barriers: Women Redefining Innovation in STEM.”
-
Organise a flagship panel featuring women innovators from academia, startups, and industry.
-
Host an exhibition showcasing students’ work, with small competitions to make it interactive.
-
Ensure IWD highlights the challenges women continue to face in STEM and honours those who made today’s opportunities possible.
I’d be honoured to have your support and can’t wait to work with you all to make next year’s IWD at Imperial unforgettable.
All the best,
Melis
